The burn on Vihaan's shoulder will not heal, and the only person who recognises it sews for a living.

Episode 02 — THE TAILOR'S DOOR

By the third morning, the mark has crossed Vihaan's shoulder.

It does not hurt like a burn anymore. It moves like lightning trapped beneath the skin—thin blue branches appearing whenever someone nearby needs help, then fading before he can show anyone. His mother calls it an allergy. The clinic calls it stress. Vihaan calls Naaz.

Naaz is seventeen, lives two floors below him and distrusts every machine she has not opened herself. Four repaired monitors glow in her room, powered by a stolen inverter and an extension board that looks one spark away from becoming a crime scene.

“Hold still,” she says, aiming a homemade scanner at his shoulder.

The screen fills with numbers, deletes them, then displays a single blue line. The line pulses before Vihaan's heart does.

Naaz scans again. The line folds into a symbol: two loops crossed by a vertical stitch. She turns the monitor toward him.

“Your burn has a logo.”

“That is not comforting.”

“It wasn't meant to be.”

The symbol gives them one lead. Naaz has seen it stamped onto old metal tailor tokens sold in the Sunday market near Charminar. By afternoon they are walking through an Old City lane too narrow for Vihaan's bike, past perfume shops, welding sparks and balconies leaning close enough to exchange secrets.

At the lane's end sits a tailor shop with no signboard.

Inside are two sewing machines, towers of folded cloth and an old woman cutting black fabric without chalk. Her silver hair is pinned into a severe knot. A measuring tape hangs around her neck. She does not look up when they enter.

“Alterations take three days,” she says.

Naaz places the symbol on her phone beside the woman's scissors. The scissors stop.

Vihaan pulls his collar aside. The mark has reached the base of his neck.

The woman looks at it once.

“Shut the door,” she says. “Kettle is behind you.”

Her name is Ori. She pours three cups of tea, although nobody asked for any, and tells Vihaan almost nothing.

The current beneath the world has many names, she says. The oldest one she knows is Aether. It passes through everyone. Usually it passes quietly. Sometimes an action gives it shape.

“So this is a power?” Vihaan asks.

“No.”

“A gift?”

“Certainly not.”

Naaz leans forward. “Then what is it?”

Ori threads a needle. The blue mark on Vihaan's shoulder brightens, and the loose thread rises toward him as if caught in water.

“A measurement,” Ori says. “And measurements are only flattering when you choose what to measure.”

She circles him with the tape, noting his shoulders, his reach and the distance from his neck to the floor. Vihaan watches her write the numbers into a ledger older than the shop.

“Whatever appeared on the flyover is not yours,” Ori continues. “You cannot inherit it, store it or switch it on because you are angry. It becomes visible when you move for someone else.”

“Visible to whom?”

“Everyone.”

That answer bothers him more than the mark.

From the front room comes the crack of metal.

One of the cloth racks tilts. Naaz is directly beneath it, still studying the scanner. Vihaan moves before he thinks. He shoves her clear and takes the edge of the rack across his back.

The lights go out.

For one breath the shop is completely dark.

Then blue-white light spills across the walls.

It pours from Vihaan's shoulders like fabric made from a storm—long, weightless and bright enough to show every hanging thread. A branching crown of Aether Lightning runs down his back. The impossible cape snaps once in air that is not moving.

Naaz forgets to speak.

Ori does not.

“Stand up,” she says.

Vihaan rises slowly. In the long fitting mirror he sees the cape behind him, taller than he is, turning the cramped shop into the centre of something enormous.

His fear vanishes. In its place comes a single, shining thought:

I look incredible.

The cape goes out.

Darkness drops onto the room. A final blue thread curls from his shoulder and disappears.

Naaz laughs so hard she has to sit on the floor.

Vihaan stares at the empty mirror. “What happened?”

Ori relights the lamp. “It told the truth.”

“About what?”

“Why you wanted it.”

He looks away, humiliated. “So I have to be selfless every second?”

“No one is selfless every second,” Ori says. “That is why the light moves.”

She gathers the fallen cloth without asking Vihaan to help. He helps anyway. Nothing lights. Somehow that feels more important.

When the shop is restored, Ori walks to the rear wall. There is an ordinary wooden door behind a curtain of unfinished jackets. Vihaan had assumed it led to a storeroom.

Ori places her palm against the same stitched symbol burned into his shoulder.

Locks turn on the other side—one, then another, then dozens descending farther than the building should allow.

“One rule before you cross,” she says. “Do not mistake being seen for being chosen.”

She opens the tailor's door.

There is no storeroom behind it.

There is a stone passage falling into blue distance, lined with threads of light. Far below, something vast breathes once, and every hanging cloth in the shop lifts toward it.

Naaz's scanner displays a word it was never programmed to know:

GATE.

Ori lifts the kettle.

“Tea gets cold,” she says. “The Aether does not.”
