Chasing the harvest back to its source, VoltCape crosses into the Shadow Zone and discovers what happens to everything people almost did.
Episode 04 — THE COLLECTION
Rain still runs down the Abids cinema sign. Skull Spider is gone, but one crimson line remains, drawing itself through a crack in the parapet and into a seam of colourless light.
Naaz follows it across her monitors. The signal has slipped beneath the frequencies her map can name.
“The signal goes below the map,” she tells him.
Vihaan presses two fingers to his comm. He remembers the people who have stopped stopping. Somewhere, there must be a place where those missing moments go.
“Then keep me on it.”
He leaves the rooftop, follows the line through a shuttered archway, and crosses the seam. The noise of Hyderabad ends behind his next step.
The Shadow Zone is soft, grey and quiet. It does not threaten him. It simply leaves things unfinished.
A room has three walls. A staircase stops halfway to a door. An envelope hangs above a table, addressed but never sent. There are no people here, yet every empty place feels as though someone has only just decided to leave.
On one sheet of paper, a sentence waits: I should have...
Vihaan recognises the shape before he understands it. The almost-call. The almost-apology. The hand that almost reached for someone, and went back into a pocket.
His cape falls to a thin blue outline. There is nobody here asking to be saved.
“Naaz?”
His name comes back broken by static. “Vihaan...”
He keeps walking. At the centre of all this unfinished space stands a pair of doors. For the first time, something has been completed.
Beyond them is a hall of mounted capes.
Hundreds. Rows above rows, rising beyond the edge of his light. Each cape hangs still in its own frame. No wind moves them. No colour burns through them.
Every frame carries a small brass label. A name. A date. The day that person last stopped for someone.
Vihaan walks between the rows with his shoulders drawn in. These are not trophies of battles. They are records of the moment something ordinary was taken away.
Then he finds a name he knows.
The cape beneath it is quiet and grey. He cannot remember seeing it lit. He was a child when the date on the label passed.
His mother. Eleven years ago.
“Ma?”
His voice sounds smaller than it should in a room this large. He thinks of her leaving for another night shift, the tired hand that still checks his forehead, the things she does without calling them anything. He had never imagined there could be a record of the day she became less likely to stop.
His hand lifts toward the frame and pauses.
At the far end of the hall, a tall figure in a formal, wrong-century coat fixes a fresh label beneath another cape.
The figure does not turn around.
