Reading time: 5 minutes

Sweatpants and joggers look alike on a hanger, and plenty of brands use the names interchangeably. But they're built differently, fit differently and suit different outfits. Knowing the difference takes about two minutes, and it'll save you from buying the wrong pair.

STREETWEAR ESSENTIALS

The Perfect Pair: Sweatpants + Oversized Tee

Our best-selling sweatpants and heavyweight oversized tees, made to be worn together. Any two sweatpants 15% off with code PANTS2.

The short answer

The difference is mostly at the ankle. Joggers are tapered through the leg and finish in a ribbed cuff that grips the ankle. Sweatpants have a straighter, roomier leg and usually an open or lightly gathered hem that falls over the shoe.

That one detail changes the whole look: joggers read sporty and sharp; sweatpants read relaxed and streetwear.

Sweatpants vs joggers: side by side

Sweatpants Joggers
Leg shape Straight and relaxed Tapered, narrowing towards the ankle
Hem Open or lightly gathered, falls over the shoe Ribbed cuff that sits at the ankle
Fit Roomy through thigh and leg Relaxed at the thigh, closer at the calf
Fabric Usually heavier terry or fleece Anything from cotton to lightweight technical fabric
Look Relaxed, streetwear, cosy Sporty, athletic, neat
Shows your shoes? Partly: the hem rests on them Fully: the cuff sits above them
Best with Oversized tees, hoodies, chunky sneakers Fitted or oversized tees, clean sneakers, runners

What are sweatpants?

Sweatpants started life as warm-up wear for athletes and became lounge staples. Today, the straight-leg sweatpant is one of the defining shapes of streetwear. It's what gives an oversized tee the right balance underneath.

SuperCape's sweatpants are built on loop-back cotton terry: the inside has small loops that lift the fabric off your skin. That's why terry stays wearable in Indian humidity when fleece would feel too warm. They're cut relaxed through the thigh and straight through the leg, with a drawcord waist and deep side pockets.

What are joggers?

Joggers were designed for movement. The tapered leg and ankle cuff keep fabric out of the way when you walk fast, climb stairs or train. That same neat shape is why joggers work so well for everyday wear: they look tidy from waist to ankle.

Many joggers, including ours, have a ribbed waistband and ribbed ankle cuffs, and some use lighter fabric than sweatpants, which makes them great for warmer days and travel.

Sweatpants or joggers: which should you buy?

Choose sweatpants if you want…

  • The streetwear look, especially with oversized tees and hoodies.
  • Maximum comfort: more room through the whole leg.
  • A relaxed, cosy fit for lounging, college, travel and weekends.
  • To wear chunky sneakers: the hem sits nicely on bulky shoes.

Choose joggers if you want…

  • A sportier, sharper look that's neat from top to bottom.
  • To show off your sneakers. The cuff frames them.
  • Something for movement: walking, the gym, running errands.
  • A shape that suits shorter frames. The taper and cuff stop fabric pooling at the ankle.

Can't decide? Most people end up owning both: sweatpants for relaxed streetwear days, joggers for active or neater days. With our PANTS2 code, any two sweatpants are 15% off, so it's an easy way to build a small rotation.

How to style sweatpants

  • With an oversized tee: the classic. Keep them tonal (black on black, off-white on off-white) for the cleanest look.
  • With a hoodie: the cold-weather version. Straight-leg sweatpants balance a big hoodie better than skinny bottoms.
  • With chunky sneakers: the hem resting on a bulky sole is a core streetwear detail.
  • Keep the top simple with printed sweatpants, so the leg graphic is the focus.

How to style joggers

  • With a fitted or regular tee: a clean, sporty everyday look.
  • With an oversized tee: works well too, because the tapered leg balances the volume on top.
  • With a zip hoodie or light jacket: great for travel and airports.
  • With clean, low-profile sneakers: the cuff shows them off, so pick a pair worth showing.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between sweatpants and joggers?

Joggers are tapered with a ribbed ankle cuff. Sweatpants have a straighter, roomier leg with an open or lightly gathered hem.

Are joggers and sweatpants the same thing?

No, although the names are often mixed up. They're similar casual pants, but joggers are tapered and cuffed while sweatpants are straight and relaxed.

Which is better for the gym?

Joggers, usually. The tapered leg and cuff keep fabric out of the way when you move.

Which is better for Indian summers?

Either can work. Choose a breathable cotton or loop-back terry, and avoid thick fleece in peak summer.

Do joggers suit short people?

Yes. The taper and ankle cuff stop extra fabric bunching at the ankle, which helps the legs look longer.

Can I wear sweatpants with an oversized T-shirt?

Yes, it's one of the best combinations in streetwear. See our oversized T-shirt styling guide for more outfit formulas.
