Reading time: 5 minutes
You've seen it on product pages: “180 GSM”, “240 GSM heavyweight”, “400 GSM fleece”. It's one of the most useful numbers on a clothing label, and one of the least explained. Here's what GSM actually means, what it tells you about a T-shirt, and which GSM to buy for Indian weather.
What does GSM mean?
GSM stands for grams per square metre. It's the weight of one square metre of the fabric. A 180 GSM fabric weighs 180 grams per square metre; a 240 GSM fabric weighs 240 grams.
In simple terms, higher GSM means heavier, denser fabric. More yarn is packed into the same area, so the fabric feels more substantial in your hand.
How is GSM measured?
Manufacturers cut a standard-sized circle out of the fabric with a sample cutter, weigh it on a precise scale, and convert that weight to grams per square metre. It's a quick, objective test, which is why GSM is used across the textile industry to compare fabrics.
GSM ranges: a quick guide
| GSM | Weight | Feels like | Typically used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 160 | Lightweight | Thin, airy, can be slightly see-through | Basic tees, innerwear, sportswear |
| 160–200 | Midweight | Soft, breathable, everyday | Regular-fit tees, summer wear |
| 200–260 | Heavyweight | Thick, structured, opaque | Premium and oversized tees |
| 260–320 | Terry and light fleece | Soft inside, substantial outside | Sweatpants, sweatshirts, joggers |
| 320+ | Heavy fleece | Warm, dense, cosy | Hoodies, winter wear, heavy trousers |
What GSM tells you about a T-shirt
- Opacity: heavier tees are less see-through, which matters most for white and light colours.
- Drape and structure: heavier fabric holds its shape and hangs in a clean line. Lighter fabric follows and clings to the body.
- Durability: denser fabric generally stands up better to repeated washing and wear.
- Warmth: heavier fabric traps more air, so it's warmer.
- Breathability: lighter fabric lets air through more easily, so it's cooler.
Does higher GSM mean better quality?
Not automatically. GSM measures weight, not quality. A 240 GSM tee made from rough, low-grade yarn can feel worse than a well-made 180 GSM tee. Quality also depends on:
- The fibre: cotton, cotton blends, or synthetics.
- The yarn: how fine, smooth and evenly spun it is.
- The knit: how tightly and evenly the fabric is made.
- The finishing and stitching.
Think of GSM as telling you what a tee is for, not how good it is. The right GSM is the one that suits the fit you want and the weather you'll wear it in.
Which GSM is best for India?
- Peak summer and humid days: 160–200 GSM. Light enough to stay comfortable in the heat.
- Most of the year, especially for oversized tees: around 220–260 GSM. Heavy enough to hold an oversized shape, still wearable through most Indian seasons.
- Sweatpants and joggers: around 260 GSM loop-back terry works year-round. The looped inside keeps fabric off your skin.
- Winter, hill stations and air-conditioned offices: 300 GSM and above for sweatshirts and hoodies.
Why oversized tees need a higher GSM
An oversized tee depends on structure. In a lightweight fabric, the extra width collapses and clings, and the tee looks like it's simply too big. At around 240 GSM, the same cut hangs in a clean, boxy line: dropped shoulders, straight sides, no clinging. That's why serious streetwear brands make oversized tees heavyweight. How to check GSM when you shop
- Check the product page. Good brands list GSM. If it isn't mentioned, ask.
- Hold it up to the light. The more light that passes through, the lighter the fabric.
- Feel the weight. A heavyweight tee feels noticeably heavier in your hand than a basic one.
- Look at how it hangs. Heavier fabric falls straight; lighter fabric drapes and clings.

Frequently asked questions
What is GSM in a T-shirt?
GSM means grams per square metre. It's the weight of the fabric: the higher the number, the heavier and denser the T-shirt.
What is a good GSM for a T-shirt?
Around 160–200 GSM is great for everyday and summer tees. For oversized tees, around 220–260 GSM gives the best shape.
Is 180 GSM good?
Yes. 180 GSM is a comfortable midweight, ideal for regular-fit tees and hot weather.
Is 240 GSM too hot for India?
For most of the year, no. A 240 GSM cotton tee is breathable enough for everyday wear. In peak summer, a lighter 180 GSM tee will feel cooler.
Is GSM the same as thread count?
No. Thread count measures how many threads are woven into a square inch, and is mostly used for woven fabrics like bedsheets. GSM measures fabric weight and is the standard for knitted fabrics like T-shirts.
Does higher GSM mean better quality?
Not on its own. GSM measures weight. Quality also depends on the fibre, yarn, knit and stitching.
